Parliamentary Outreach Working Group

This Working Group supports and helps build global membership in Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and encourage further parliamentary action on key initiatives especially to promote a nuclear weapons convention.

Inspired by the encouraging success of the Abolition 2000 working group on Mayors for Peace, which helped build membership of Mayors for Peace from about 500 to over 4000 mayors and cities around the world, we hope to raise PNND membership from its current level of 800 legislators to over 2012 by the end of 2012. We have a perfect opportunity to promote PNND at this time in follow-up to the letter UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent to every parliament in the world praising the work that PNND has done to promote negotiations for a Nuclear Weapons Convention and encouraging parliamentarians to become more active.

We will also encourage parliamentarians to endorse the Parliamentary Declaration Supporting a Nuclear Weapons Convention, adopt additional resolutions in their parliaments supporting the nuclear weapons convention (See current parliamentary resolutions supporting NWC) and encourage parliamentarians to call specifically on their governments to support the UN resolutions on a NWC and proposals for an Ottawa/Oslo Process to start NWC negotiations.

PNND documents to encourage your parliamentarians to join:

The Australian Section of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has produced a flyer specific to Australia to encourage their parliamentarians to join.  Others could use this as a model to produce outreach flyers for their countries.

We invite any A2000 member to join the working group and help us in this new initiative.

Please contact aslater@rcn.com to join.
