Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev will chair a special UNSC thematic debates entitled “WMD Non-proliferation: Confidence-building Measures.”
Kazakhstan will introduce the topic. They are expected to concentrate on ideas for disarmament and global security as outlined in the concept and vision President Nazarbayev introduced in the Security Council in January 2017. This includes a call by Kazakhstan for the UN Security Council to endorse the goal of the elimination of nuclear weapons by 2045, the 100th anniversary of the UN.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Ambassador Jan Eliasson, Chair of the Governing Board of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) have been invited to address the debates.
