The event is hosted by the Abolition 2000 Youth and Nuclear Disarmament Working Group, and is being held in conjunction with the UN negotiations on a nuclear-weapons ban treaty.
The event will serve as a platform to:
Youth were instrumental in the success of other recent UN High Level Conferences, such as the Climate Change conference which achieved the Paris agreement, and the Sustainable Development Conference which achieved the SDGs. Youth could play a similarly important role in building success for the 2018 UN HLC on Nuclear Disarmament.
Abolition 2000 established the youth working group a number of years ago in conjunction with Ban All Nukes generation (BANg). It has recently been re-energised in order to more effectively engage young academics, parliamentarians, practitioners and students in nuclear risk-reduction and disarmament issues.
The working group provides a forum for networking and building cooperation between various youth-led nuclear disarmament initiatives, and with youth working on other related issues or peace and sustainable development. The working group also provides a bridge between youth and other actions, initiatives and members of Abolition 2000, the global network to eliminate nuclear weapons.
We believe that youth can make a significant contribution to advance nuclear disarmament and achieve a safer world without nuclear weapons. We are looking to forward to seeing you in New York.
