Abolition 2000 Annual General Meeting
Scotland 17-19 April 2013
Support the campaign to make Scotland a nuclear weapon free zone!
“The two year countdown to the Independence Referendum in the autumn of 2014 will see a number of highlight events and none will be of greater importance than this visit of international activists and experts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament coming to Scotland and our Parliament.”
– Bill Kidd, MSP, A2000 Global Council Member, Co-President of PNND
Dear Abolition 2000 Network Members,
We are very excited to announce that Abolition 2000 has decided to hold its Annual General Meeting for 2013 in Edinburgh Scotland on 17 – 18 April. The two day meeting will include a public event, and an optional trip to Faslane.
The Scottish Parliament and people have expressed their opposition to nuclear weapons – and specifically to the UK basing its entire nuclear arsenal in Scotland (deployed on submarines based in the port of Faslane). Scotland will be voting on a referendum for independence in 2014, and the Scottish desire to become a nuclear-weapon-free zone provides an opportunity to fundamentally challenge the UK’s nuclear policies and practices – perhaps driving the UK toward complete nuclear disarmament.
At the invitation of our Scottish colleagues, we have decided to arrange this meeting in Scotland to demonstrate international solidarity and support for the Scottish anti-nuclear campaign – and for the global campaign for nuclear abolition.
This historic event will be held in Edinburgh, with some meetings taking place in the Scottish Parliament. The coordinating committee is honoured to be working with local hosts Bill Kidd MSP (A2000 Global Council member and Co-President of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament) and the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
The meeting will include:
17 April, daytime: A2000 Annual General Meeting.
18 April, daytime: A2000 Annual General Meeting continued, Evening: Public meeting
19 April, optional excursion to Faslane naval base – home of the UK nuclear Trident submarine fleet
As a Member of Abolition 2000, we very much hope that you will be able to join us in Scotland and we ask you to promote this event to your networks to encourage others to come.
Activists travelling to Europe for the A2000 Annual General Meeting may wish to combine this with meetings taking place in Geneva immediately after. These include: the Prep Com Meeting of the States Parties to Nuclear Weapon Free Zones (19 April); ICAN Campaigners meetings (20-21 April); the Prep Com of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (22 April-3 May); NGO events at the NPT Prep Com including some organised by Abolition 2000 and ICAN; and the International Security Forum, sponsored by the Swiss government (22-24 April).
We urge you to make every effort to join us for this extraordinary event. Further details will be circulated soon.
The network would warmly welcome your support for this meeting, and for our future activities. If you want to make a donation, you can transfer any US dollar amount to:
