This Working Group supports and helps build global membership in Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and encourage further parliamentary action on key initiatives especially to promote a nuclear weapons convention.
Inspired by the encouraging success of the Abolition 2000 working group on Mayors for Peace, which helped build membership of Mayors for Peace from about 500 to over 8000 mayors and cities around the world, we hope to raise PNND membership from its current level of 800 legislators to over 2020 by the end of 2020.
The group also encourages parliamentarians to support specific initiatives for nuclear-risk reduction and disarmament, in particular those outlined in the endorse the Parliamentary Action Plan for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World, which was released at the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in October 2017.
The Action Plan includes parliamentary actions to reduce nuclear risks through de-alerting and no-first-use, eliminate the role of nuclear weapons in security doctrines, support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, slash nuclear weapons budgets and divest from nuclear weapons corporations, establish nuclear-weapon-free zones, end the testing of nuclear weapons, support negotiations for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, promote full implementation of the NPT, participate in the 2018 UN High-Level Conference on Nuclear Disarmament, and engage in public education and promotion of nuclear disarmament.
